Search and rescue teams have located the body of a man who was washed away on Saturday night during the flash floods in oThonganti north of Durban. The teams found the body in a stream not far from the man’s home. The body of a woman who is believed to be his girlfriend was recovered last night.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick, says during the search one of their team members experienced breathing difficulties but he is in a stable condition.

“A short while ago K9 Dante from Umhlali SAPS K9 rescue managed to locate the body of the missing man here in Tongaat. We have the SAPS helicopter about to land on scene. This is due to the position of the body; it is quite inaccessible. So, we will try to make use of the helicopter to recover him.”

Meanwhile, Meyrick explains the difficulties that search and rescue teams are facing due to the damage to infrastructure.

“The biggest challenge for us is the size of the debris. It makes it difficult for us to locate the body especially without a K9. The party now is in a march covered by debris, it makes it difficult to spot the body. So yes, during the flight, it is very difficult to locate these bodies.”
