Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has issued a firm warning to residents of the Western Cape. This is after severe wet and windy weather conditions devastated the province this week.

Cape Town Disaster Management says 14 000 informal structures have been impacted by flooding and wind damage in the Cape Metro thus far. These include areas in Khayelitsha, Lwandle, Gugulethu and Tafelsig, among others.

Heavy weather conditions are expected to continue throughout this week in the Western Province.

“I have one or two messages, the first is please, when an official says that you need to evacuate, please make sure that you listen, if an official says please don’t use this road, don’t use the road, if there’s no official and you see lots of water going across the bridge, don’t brave that bridge, we want to make sure that safety comes first in this province,” says Western Cape Premier Alan Winde.

It’s been four days of extreme weather conditions across the Western Cape. And the proverbial worst is yet to come with more severe rainfall on the cards for tomorrow.

Localised flooding, storm-related power outages, rising dam levels and fast-flowing rivers are among the impacts thus far.
